Rising Youth Theatre is pleased to announce its fourth season of original plays based in the Phoenix community. As with their previous productions, plays are written by professional playwrights in collaboration with youth, artists, and community members.
DISENGAGE will premiere in December 2014. Directed by co-founder Xanthia Angel Walker and written by Tucson playwright Milta Ortiz, this project will explore why young people are disengaging from public education. Recent reports have shown that Arizona has the highest dropout rate in the country. This project explores the youth experiences and stories behind these statistics. Support for Disengage is provided in part by The Helios Education Foundation.

VIEW FROM THE TRACKS: THE LIGHT RAIL PLAYS will be produced for a second time in partnership with Valley Metro in February 2015. This second incarnation of plays on public transportation will feature eight brand new plays, with new pairs of adult and youth artists creating work based on and around the light rail.

FANDOM will premiere in June 2015. Directed by co-founder Sarah Sullivan and written by local playwright Carrie Behrens, the play will explore the ways young people create community out of online fan spaces. Being a fan is much more than being an enthusiast and this play aims to take both ‘shipping and stories off of Tumblr and onto the stage, in a totally unique exploration of what it means to really love something.
