Venus in Stitches by Lou Clark
Directed by Sarah Sullivan and Xanthia Walker
Venus in Stitches is a play set in the Sunnyslope neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona that explores the meaning of family. In the story, a community is thrown into mayhem when neighbors decorate out of season, make a ton of tamales, and sing strange songs to welcome home a long-lost loved one. Generational gaps are mended in this heartwarming tale for audiences of all ages.
Rising Youth Theatre worked with youth and adults to create their first inter-generational production. This new play was developed through workshops with families and based on the variety of amusing to poignant responses to the question “How has your family changed?” The play is co-presented by Rising Youth Theatre and Phoenix Center for the Arts.
34 community actors, comprised of youth and the adults in their families, will perform in the public performances of Venus in Stitches, alongside professional actors Yolanda London, Kaleena Newman, and Elizabeth Polen.
