When it comes to accessing a quality education, not all children are treated equally.

Rising Youth Theatre invites youth ages 12 – 20 and professional adult artists to apply to be part of its season-long artistic project in partnership with the ACLU’s #Demand2Learn Campaign. This project will explore the education system – in Arizona and across the United States – and the ways these systems can support or fail the young people in our community. The project will start in the fall with weekly workshops, dialogue, and creative exploration – a small group of youth and adults will explore big ideas and begin to develop theatrical content. In the spring, we will build on this work with a full cast and crew, developing a full original play around these ideas. Like all of Rising Youth Theatre’s work, this project will not take place in a traditional theatre venue, but will explore the ways placing site-specific theatre in surprising places can engage new audiences.

This project is in partnership with ACLU’S #Demand2Learn Campaign, focused on eliminating practices that disproportionately push children out of school or prevent them from enrolling. Rising Youth Artists will work directly with organizers from the campaign to learn advocacy strategies, and build a piece of artwork through which young people advocate for themselves and their peers.


  • Weekly workshops / community meetings starting September 21, 2017 and continuing through February 2018. These meetings are held every Thursday and occasional Saturdays (see full schedule at the bottom of the post)
  • Attending community events related to the project and the campaign throughout the fall
  • Working in some capacity as part of the full theatrical production (performer, designer, technician, etc.) in April 2018. This will include regular rehearsals and meetings throughout March and April.
  • Bringing your creative energy, advocacy, and willingness to both learn and share expertise to the ensemble

  • Rising Youth Theatre General Manager Julio-César Sauceda will contact you to set up an interview time, on either Thursday September 21 or Saturday September 23. You must be able to attend an interview to apply for the project. If neither of these days work for you, we will work with you to find an alternate time.
  • Applicants will be notified about participation in the project by September 24, 2017.
  • If you can’t commit to the year-long project, but are interested in getting involved in the spring, make sure that you’re on our mailing list! We will hold general auditions and interviews in the spring for performers, designers, and technicians.

Across Arizona, students #Demand2Learn but many are denied the opportunity because of exclusionary policies and practices in district and charter schools.

Demand2Learn is a campaign to stop exclusionary practices in our schools and protect the promise of an education for all children. The social and economic impacts of school push-out are immoral and staggering. Children of color and those with disabilities are disproportionately harmed by suspensions and expulsions. The use of heavy-handed policies has resulted in pushing children out of school and cheating them out of the opportunities an education affords. Some schools have developed exclusionary enrollment practices that prevent families from choosing the school they want for their children. Others have higher rates of expulsions and suspensions of students with disabilities and students of color.

We’re partnering with schools, parents, youth and teachers to address this issue through a cooperative, engaging process that will make our schools and communities stronger.


Rising Youth Theatre is a professional theatre company based in Phoenix, Arizona that operates on a model of youth working alongside professional artists.
