Rising Youth Theatre, a youth leadership organization working at the intersection of art and social justice, invites audiences to join us for CURIOUS: Playback Theatre for Queer Narratives. This project uses Playback Theatre, an interactive, storytelling based art form, to activate Queer stories and bring our community together.
Queer narratives are often overlooked in theatre spaces and beyond. Audiences who attend CURIOUS will listen to and share their own queer stories - humorous and heartfelt true experiences from our community. These stories will be brought to life by a Queer ensemble of young people using an improvised theatre style known as Playback Theatre, with movement, music, and emotional honesty.
Directors Sofía Fencken and Thameenah Muhammad have created this space to center queer narratives, and have put together an ensemble of young people identifying as LGBTQ+ to learn how to hold our stories with grace and trust themselves and each other to create beautiful scenes using the improvisational form of Playback Theatre. Carly Bates and Jisun Myung bring playback expertise and music to the ensemble, which also includes Ray Anderson, Bishop Bell, Lee Johnson, Carlos Lara, Alex Parra Longoria, Cheyenne McLaren, Ryn Mercado, and Nathan Stetson.
Performances will be held in room 304 at the Phoenix Center for the Arts on October 27 and 28, 2023 at 7:00pm and on October 29 at 2:00pm.
During this sharing, audience members will be prompted to share stories from their lived experiences, inspiring an improvised scene by our actors! This event is free and open to all but spots are limited to allow for a more casual, intimate environment. Donations to support the cost of the program and keep it accessible for all can be made with your reservation or on site. To reserve tickets go to curious2023.eventbrite.com.
